Today was c and me's day of fun
c determined not to wilt on the couch
or putter in the backyard
so we head off for RIB FEST
in Etobicoke

me = slightly leery of the Pink Rib Fest pig with his happy smile and his devil may care attitude about being eaten
But c and me have been watching too much Food network and there is too much bbq happening on the food network for me to care TOO TOO much about eating the flag waving pig.

So off we go.

At the fair things are far chiller than the rib-sanity we've seen in the US. MOst of the booths are from the US so we decide to be semi-anthro about our rib consumption and decide to visit one US and one Canadian rib stall to compare. But when we get to the Kansas City rib place (KC, c's alternative home town) everyone there is from Scarborough.

c and me: "But it says 'Kansas City'" -- thinking "This is a lie"
KC BBQ FRAUDS: "Oh well the RIG is from Kansas"

Humpf.

But the ribs are GREAT. We get a small rack and connect face to bone immediately. Suddenly i see clearly why there are little mobile hand washing stations everywhere. I can feel the ribsauce creeping into my hairline but i don't care. Must consume rib. I never knew that the best part of the rib was so close to the bone before.

INTERESTING and YUMMY.

Afterward we abandon thoughts of Canadian rib -- having technically just visited both - like Niagara Falls -- and head for the fair/games grounds. I want to be sucked in by the promise of a stuffed bear for a quarter and the ability to throw a dart but i'm too jaded.
Then suddenly I spot a possible chance for victory. "GUESS YOUR AGE/WEIGHT FOR $2"

THe man looks giddy. His face twitches as I approach him and muddle over my possible prizes. It's like he already knows me and believes without a doubt that he will easily swindle me out of my money. Okay, he says, I'm writing down your age on this piece of paper. Okay tell me how old you are.

CRUSHED!!

He turns over the paper.

He guessed 23.

SUCKER!

Me = one stuffed duck richer

AND

c won a frog for swinging the hammer and making the bell ding.

We are clearly the perfect lesbian couple. SO DECEPTIVE and SLY!!!

Afterwards we get sucked into Jack Daniels ribs which were both not HOT and kind of bland so we headed home.

All in all a successful evening with only 3 sucky ribs.

Not bad not bad at all.

Now I'm full of ribs and ready for bed y'all.

it was funny last night - i had a couple people from my class over as part of a farewell/i don't want to teach tonight effort. all the funny people came. one weird person came, and clearly didn't want to leave.
i don't feel diva enough to deal with stalkers anymore
i practically carried her out the door and threw her into an awaiting car.

i have a girlfriend now, you know?
these awkward moments are my problem no longer.

had an interesting talk about WHY i want to be/am a writer.
or why i like being an academic
L thought it was enough to love it, i can't help but think that's a little simplistic. the truth is we should ALL love our jobs but that is not always what DOING your job is about. if you're making money off it, if you want to continue making money off it, it's a whole different monster. it's a making money monster. it's a i have to get this done even though i don't feel like it monster. LOVING writing isn't necessarily going to get you through that. it just might mean that the product feels better to you than, say, a presentation on Hawaii or something... toothpaste.

i found out that one of the women in the class works for a company that makes adhesives for FUCKING BRACES. how cool is that!? can you imagine if that works out that i end up with cool pictures of girls with braces.

in other news the play is less than 2 weeks away.

What is it with this thing about writers having to be hopeless lost causes, forgetful nymphs with inkstained fingers, dangerous lives, bad manners and social skills? Where did that particular stereotype come from and why is it so attractive? Just last week i was having lunch with a dramaturge friend who mourned her hopeless history and new found stability. Because it was so much easier, she said, to create art when everything else was going wrong. She used to sit up with her bottle of Jack D and her notebook and write sonnets. Make crank calls to the boy who wasn't returning her calls. All fuel for the tortured soul. What was she doing now, she mused, making appointments, enjoying weekends out in the country, living the soft life, imaginably like cholesterol for for the artistic artery.
Right?

Or is it really?

I mean, i remember being miserable and carefree, fucked up and crying on the bed, i remember my life being a mess, i don't remember getting all that much done though. I remember the one really amazing thing i wrote was write after the whole mess was over. My break up poem. I saw some homo theatre student at Queen's last year and he was using it for his monologue class.

Hilarious.

when i was in University there was this boy who fell in love with my roommate in this very odd lolita way, although they were both roughly the same age. I remember one night listening from my room as this doo told my friend that part of his artistic path involved drinking a bottle of scotch every night. Because that's how the greats did it. The REAL greats. I wish he had listed them so i could have looked them up.

Of course there's some precedent for it right? What was that story about The Basketball Diaries, which was based on this notebook Jim Carroll kept through a drug induced stupor, that he pissed all over before he published it.

Then there's me, i can barely stand it when my notebook gets WET.

So i'm in this prison/assylum talking to all these nurses about why it is i'm there. i say i'm there visiting this woman who was married to this man that i was in an S/M relationship with. the nurses have never heard of nonmonog so i am explaining it in detail, trying not to sound too judgemental. they keep starring at me. finally i ask if i can just have my forms and go and they comply. i wander down this hallway and get to this other desk and shake out my purse to find the forms to give to the attendant so i can go in and see my friend.
it turns out i have two forms with two different dates on them.
which is suspcious.
i tell the attendant i don't know what happened.
she says she wants to detain me.
i freak out.
say i just was trying to help out, go visit this woman to calm her down. say she KNOWS i'm coming and i don't want to be responsible for any INCIDENTS.
get sweaty.
decide i'm going to just run away.
start running.

wake up.
